Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

From everyone on the league committee, we would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for a Happy New Year!

We look forward to seeing everyone again in 2020.

BHDBL Committee

Mr L A Beech

It is with regret that we announce the sad news that Mr L A Beech, co-founder of the BHDBL, passed away on the 29th of September 2019 aged 97.

This is Leonard’s story:-

In November 1943, a group of representatives from local clubs interested in badminton held a meeting to form matches against each other in the area. There were 9 clubs interested and the teams and matches were organised.  He then formed a club called Sandringham in 1945 and became secretary of that club.

In 1957 he became Treasurer of the BHDBL and then Secretary in 1966. Whilst being Secretary they held the league committee meetings from his house and also helped run the annual League tournaments. He became Chairperson of the League in 1974 until 2013 when he retired after 70 years of voluntary work on the BHDBL committee.

In memory of Leonard, the present League Officers and committee decided to honour his services within the league with a £100 donation to the Alzheimer’s Research UK, as sadly Leonard became ill and developed dementia in his later years.

2019-2020 Season Gets Underway

The 2019-2020 season has now officially started and we look forward to another season of close competitive matches, competitive divisions and most importantly – great badminton!

This season we would like to welcome East Thurrock and OPBC to the league.  I’m sure all of the clubs who play against them will make them feel welcome and help them out with scorecards, rules, etc., if they are unsure.

Please remember there were some clarifications and amendments to the rules this season.  To recap:-

  • Shuttles & Light Refreshments – Shall be provided by the home club. All League matches shall be played with feathered shuttles. Light refreshments are to be provided by the home club and should be of a reasonable standard (e.g., tea, coffee, water, squash and biscuits).
  • Promotion and Relegation – this season there will be 2 teams being promoted and 2 teams being relegated from each division.

As always, if you have got any questions, please contact the League Committee whose details are on the Contact Us page.

The League Committee would like to wish all clubs and players the very best of luck this season!

BHDBL 75th Anniversary Celebrations

A big thank you to everyone who turned up to the BDHBL 75th Anniversary celebrations at the weekend.  It’s a great event to meet members of other clubs in a social setting who are all part of the BHDBL family of clubs.

Big thanks to the BHDBL committee for organising the night and making sure things ran smoothly.  It’s marked the end of a great season and we now look forward to a summer break and then back for the new season in September!

Emerson Eagles Special Event

Emerson Eagles BC are hosting an event for all club’s to attend on Wednesday 3rd July at Emerson Park School, Wychelm Road, Hornchurch, Essex RM11 3AD between 7.30pm and 9.30pm.

They will be bringing all their kit from this season to sell off, at much reduced prices, in readiness for the new season’s designs being released. Players are allowed to try rackets if they are interested in buying them. There is no cost to attend and no obligation to buy unless you can’t resist a bargain!!

The committee would like to thank all of the teams who participated in the league this season and it was great to see the scorecards being submitted in a timely fashion to allow us to keep the website updated frequently.  Congratulations to all of the champions this season and we look forward to the new 2019-2020 season starting in September.

League Secretary Vacancy

Our current League Secretary, Katie, is stepping down at the end of the season for personal reasons.  Therefore, we have a vacancy for a new League Secretary to get involved in the Barking, Havering and District Badminton League.

Performing the role of league secretary provides great insight into the operation and overall running of the BHDBL. Although primarily an administrative role, which requires the successful candidate to accurately take meeting minutes and respond via email to all league correspondence, the position also awards great responsibility for structuring the divisions and ensuring that teams are correctly promoted or relegated. It is a varied and interesting post that supports the work of the league’s treasurer and match secretary.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Collect team entries, insurance certificates and player registrations via email at the beginning of each season.
  • Create the first draft of the new season’s divisions across the men’s doubles, ladies pairs and combination league, promoting and relegating clubs if required based on the previous season’s results.
  • Maintain and update the contact list of clubs, checking for the correct details of all club secretaries and match secretaries.
  • Act as the first point of contact for league correspondence to and from the clubs, bringing any pertinent issues to be discussed before the committee at the next available meeting.
  • Take the meeting minutes at all league committee meetings and circulate to the committee.
  • Help the chairperson plan the annual general meeting (AGM) and create a report to feed back to the assembled clubs.
  • Participate in league committee meetings, sharing views and opinions on the issues discussed.
  • Helping with ad hoc projects and events as required by the chairperson.

League committee meetings are typically held five or six times a year, with meetings taking between 60 and 90 minutes depending on the topics to be discussed. These are usually held in the evening at a local pub in Hornchurch. On the whole, the meetings themselves are not a vast time commitment, however the league secretary’s other duties are a little more time consuming, particularly at the end of the summer months and the start of the season in September and October, when the new divisions are being formed and circulated.

Being organised, having a clear, explanatory tone and good email manner are all important traits in a league secretary. Also, the new league secretary will work closely with other members of the committee, such as the match secretary and treasurer, so excellent communications skills are also a plus.

The role presents a fantastic opportunity for an engaging club player to have an active role in shaping the league moving forward, as we modernise our processes and structure for the future of local badminton. You’ll have a hand in all areas of the league management and be a vital cog in the league’s internal machinery.

If you would like to apply for the role, please contact our League Chairperson, Stephen, by email on

Cancelled: 2019 BHDBL Handicap Tournament

Unfortunately due to insufficient numbers we are having to cancel the 2019 BHDBL Tournament.  Any money which has already paid will be refunded.

We will try to organise another event next season if the demand is there.  In the meantime, please remember that it’s the League’s 75th Anniversary this year and we are organising a social event to celebrate it with members.  More details can be found on the website (

Apologies again for the cancellation but we simply cannot proceed with the low numbers we have entered.  Thank you to everyone who entered for your support.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards

BHDBL 75th Anniversary

As the league has been running for 75 years, the committee thought it would be a nice idea for members from all 15 clubs to meet on a social basis and to present the trophy winners of the season. The league will be subsidising some of the payment, therefore it will cost £15 per head with a buffet. All the details are on the photo and flyer attached.   At this time we can only offer members only. If we have space nearer the time we may offer this to partners too.
