League Secretary Vacancy

Our current League Secretary, Katie, is stepping down at the end of the season for personal reasons.  Therefore, we have a vacancy for a new League Secretary to get involved in the Barking, Havering and District Badminton League.

Performing the role of league secretary provides great insight into the operation and overall running of the BHDBL. Although primarily an administrative role, which requires the successful candidate to accurately take meeting minutes and respond via email to all league correspondence, the position also awards great responsibility for structuring the divisions and ensuring that teams are correctly promoted or relegated. It is a varied and interesting post that supports the work of the league’s treasurer and match secretary.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Collect team entries, insurance certificates and player registrations via email at the beginning of each season.
  • Create the first draft of the new season’s divisions across the men’s doubles, ladies pairs and combination league, promoting and relegating clubs if required based on the previous season’s results.
  • Maintain and update the contact list of clubs, checking for the correct details of all club secretaries and match secretaries.
  • Act as the first point of contact for league correspondence to and from the clubs, bringing any pertinent issues to be discussed before the committee at the next available meeting.
  • Take the meeting minutes at all league committee meetings and circulate to the committee.
  • Help the chairperson plan the annual general meeting (AGM) and create a report to feed back to the assembled clubs.
  • Participate in league committee meetings, sharing views and opinions on the issues discussed.
  • Helping with ad hoc projects and events as required by the chairperson.

League committee meetings are typically held five or six times a year, with meetings taking between 60 and 90 minutes depending on the topics to be discussed. These are usually held in the evening at a local pub in Hornchurch. On the whole, the meetings themselves are not a vast time commitment, however the league secretary’s other duties are a little more time consuming, particularly at the end of the summer months and the start of the season in September and October, when the new divisions are being formed and circulated.

Being organised, having a clear, explanatory tone and good email manner are all important traits in a league secretary. Also, the new league secretary will work closely with other members of the committee, such as the match secretary and treasurer, so excellent communications skills are also a plus.

The role presents a fantastic opportunity for an engaging club player to have an active role in shaping the league moving forward, as we modernise our processes and structure for the future of local badminton. You’ll have a hand in all areas of the league management and be a vital cog in the league’s internal machinery.

If you would like to apply for the role, please contact our League Chairperson, Stephen, by email on chairperson@bhdbl.org.

Cancelled: 2019 BHDBL Handicap Tournament

Unfortunately due to insufficient numbers we are having to cancel the 2019 BHDBL Tournament.  Any money which has already paid will be refunded.

We will try to organise another event next season if the demand is there.  In the meantime, please remember that it’s the League’s 75th Anniversary this year and we are organising a social event to celebrate it with members.  More details can be found on the website (https://bhdbl.org/bhdbl-75th-anniversary/).

Apologies again for the cancellation but we simply cannot proceed with the low numbers we have entered.  Thank you to everyone who entered for your support.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards

BHDBL

BHDBL 75th Anniversary

As the league has been running for 75 years, the committee thought it would be a nice idea for members from all 15 clubs to meet on a social basis and to present the trophy winners of the season. The league will be subsidising some of the payment, therefore it will cost £15 per head with a buffet. All the details are on the photo and flyer attached.   At this time we can only offer members only. If we have space nearer the time we may offer this to partners too.

2019 BHDBL Handicap Tournament

The 2019 BHDBL Handicap Tournament has been organised for a bit earlier in the year this year in place of the Challenge Cup.  The tournament will take place on Sunday 17th February from 9am to 4pm at William Edwards School, Grays (click here for a map).

Any player who wishes to enter must be registered with one of the clubs in the league to play.  League registration costs £1 per player and will entitle the player to participate in the tournament.  Entry fees for the tournament are £12 per person payable by bank transfer (all details are on the website).

We are proposing to run 4 events this year:-

  • Ladies Doubles
  • Men’s Doubles
  • Mixed Doubles
  • Men’s Singles

Registration and payment of £12 per person is required by 7pm on the Monday 4th February.  Please click here to go to the event booking page.  Once you have booked, you will receive and email confirmation which contains the payment details for the entry fee.  Please make sure you follow the instructions to avoid having an invalid entry.

Depending on the number of entries for the Doubles events, we may have to restrict or cancel the Men’s Singles event due to time constraints.  Therefore, Men’s Singles players should pay their entry fee on the day of the tournament.

If you would like to volunteer to help out with the running of the tournament, please contact the League’s Treasurer (Paula) on treasurer@bhdbl.org.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Challenge Cup Final – Congratulations Redbridge!

Firstly we would like to thank Wychelm for hosting the venue and allowing us 2 courts from their club night.

The teams in the challenge cup final were:-

Redbridge
Rosie Allen
Claire Page
Sarah Tolliday
Ashley White
Ravi Patel
Kelvin Koon

Emerson Eagles 2
Lucy Scrutton
Mauteen Wusu
Emily Thompson
Raece Master

The handicaps were Redbridge -4 v Emerson Eagles 2 @ scratch.

Although the final score was 7-2 to Redbridge, Emerson Eagles 2 put up a very strong fight. There were some very close games and some excellent rallies. As you can see from the scoresheet (below), 3 of the games went to a decider.

Our congratulations go to Redbridge on retaining the challenge cup for a second season.

2018 Challenge Cup Final Result

**IMPORTANT** – matches on 4th April with Emerson Eagles

Due to building works being carried out at Emerson Park Academy, the following fixtures are affected with minor changes:-

Men’s Division 1 – Emerson Eagles 1 v Ramgarhia 1
Combi Division 2 – Emerson Eagles 3 v Corinthians 1

Emerson Eagles are only able to have the hall until 9.30pm so the start time has been brought forward to 7pm.
Also due to the nature of the building work going on, you may not be able to access the sport hall by the usual footpath and therefore you may have to walk through the main school.
Please can all team captains and match secretaries for Ramgarhia and Corinthians ensure their team members know this.
Finally, as time is limited on the night, please make sure games are played with as little gap between them as possible and the match gets started as soon as possible so it can finish on time.
